A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
