Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
