The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president started showing the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer them your pullover as well.
The apparent and clear fact that Christ in biblical accounts requests a kind of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both meekness and conviction, a combination that genuine American Christians should embrace.
