Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important official commented the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
