Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
